“Teach These Things Freely unto Your Children”

January 26 – February 1, 2026Genesis 5; Moses 62 chapters · 100 verses

Genesis 5 is a family record from Adam to Noah, with one line that stands out: “Enoch walked with God.” Moses 6 tells Enoch's story. A young man, slow of speech, is called to preach. He learns the gospel Adam was taught: faith, repentance, baptism and the Holy Ghost, and the command to teach it to our children.

The text shown is the King James Version, the Church's preferred English Bible for classes and meetings. The General Handbook lists the ESV and NRSV as helpful translations for ages 14 and up. They are copyrighted, so they open on their publishers' sites. Highlighted verses have a study note with links to compare that verse.

Study guide

Genesis mentions Enoch in a single sentence; the Book of Moses gives him two chapters. These notes help you see what the restored account adds.

How to read this week

  • Don't skip the genealogy. Genesis 5 links Adam to Noah. Its rhythm (“and he died … and he died”) makes Enoch's ending stand out: he didn't die; God took him.
  • Read Moses 6 as a call story. Enoch's objections (young, disliked, slow of speech) and the Lord's answers follow the same pattern as Moses, Jeremiah and others.
  • Notice what Adam was taught. Moses 6:51–68 shows the first principles and ordinances taught from the beginning, not invented later.
  • Look for teaching at home. Adam taught his children; Enoch's message was what Adam had taught. The chapter models passing the gospel down through generations.

Questions for the week

  • What would it look like for you to “walk with God” like Enoch (Genesis 5:24; Moses 6:34)?
  • Enoch felt inadequate. What has the Lord asked you to do that felt beyond you?
  • How have you seen the Lord “open your mouth” when you needed to speak (Moses 6:32)?
  • What does Moses 6:59–60 teach you about what happens when we're born again?
  • What's one gospel truth you want to “teach freely” to the children in your life?
